common mergansers hiding under the ice

common goldeneyes and common mergansers arent exactly common. they hate being watched and will NOT tolerate being followed. i see them only a few times a year. this time of year the remaining open water is so limited, i saw 2 small gatherings sharing the creek and hiding under the ice shelf.

we are enjoying another week of moderate temps hovering just below freezing. its the perfect winter temp, and completely unusual.

everyone says it just means february will be that much colder. for now, i'll enjoy birding with only 2 layers of gear on.

  1. as we drove through the city, i told mister pencilfox we should go in search of ducks, but he was bent on driving to point woronzof.
now i wish i had seen these little arctic explorers and their ice shelves.

    loving your photos, as always....

  3. glad you are getting a bit of a break from the deep freeze so you can get out and take lovely photos. mergansers are definitely tricky - you did great!
