testing the beams for stability

we took a long weekend and went to a cabin on caribou island (which is in skilak lake along the kenai river). the owners are building a main cabin, so there was plenty of hauling, digging and squaring up.

i saw my first golden-crowned kinglet (a teensy fluttering bird), gray jays, and varied thrushes. we ate coconut salmon fritters and bbq salmon tacos, and smith-sghetti which looks like spaghetti but with totally different ingredients. (which reminds me of when we made macaroni and cheese once without using any dairy.)

the island is special for many reasons, but one is that it contains a lot of lichen. happy lichen. lichen with apothecia (think Ernst Haeckel structures, or dr. seuss) which you just dont see in the city where lichen is not so happy. i spent an afternoon wallowing in the wet moss taking pictures of lichen.
